while synthetic strings draw long lines across a cool digital plane. chuck van zyl is at home in this endlessly inventive genre, offering ample muscle for the adventurous, archaic modulations for the experimentalist and dreamy floating space for the cloudwalker. obliquity of the ecliptic is a free improvisational, ambient space duo who create swelling and spacey cinematic drone music. spacious analog pad synths, ethereal vocal loops, ebow guitar and minimal beats fill the space to create a meditative and magical experience where occasional chaotic walls of sounds will ensue. every show is special as no two performances are ever the same. live shows also consist of gorgeous and hypnotic outer space visual projections, smoke and mind-bending music. april 13th - biomess, beholder and hallowed bells biomechanical shapeshifters (or biomess for short) is the project of floyd bledsoe from trenton, new jersey. the name has been used for his electronic music experimentations since the early 1990s. the concept is that biomess is not solo but a group consisting of various devices that create the soundwaves. the 2010s saw recordings start to appear on the internet and now there are over 35 albums available on the bandcamp website with many containing several hours of music each. styles range from quiet droning atmospherics to chaotic abstract noise and many spaces in between. floyd is also one third of the melting transistor and records and performs with them. 2018 marks the first time that biomess will appear live on stage as a solo act. painting landscapes of distant planets, terrain of sub-atomic particles, the space between impulse and action, clouds formations and chase scenes, sonic worlds never before heard are spontaneously composed and served to the listener throughout the improvisational performances of beholder. one only needs to open to the experience and allow the music to unfold. this trio is based on the dynamic musical relationship of pianist dan dechellis and guitarist john philip tomasic. both known for their unique approach to their instruments and the art of improvisation, their recordings and performances of improvised new music in new york and new england reach back to the late 1990s. having met while at the new england conservatory, their combined vision, energy and talents have laid the foundation for their latest efforts on “claim no native land” with drummer zach martin. together they chart a path for both themselves and the listener, traversing several vast and different worlds, emotions, declarations, linear time and the eternal present. the music at once travels forward and remains stationary simultaneously. dedicate the time to listen and you will be rewarded. hallowed bells is the project of philadelphia-based musicians alison stout (synths, beats) and darian scatton ( synths , processed pedal harp). creating electronic songs-without-words, the duo weaves together sweet, lyrical melodies, dissonant harmonies, and mesmerizing noisescapes - producing a unique and personal synthesized landscape of sound. december 1st 2017 - thin airx, the tangent project, the ministry of inside things the ministry of inside things - consisting of synthesist chuck van zyl and electric guitarist art cohen, philadelphia-based the ministry of inside things are considered among the most innovative of us spacemusicians today. equally influenced by the early groundbreaking music of tangerine dream, klaus schulze and ash ra tempel as well as that of pink floyd and the grateful dead, their work pushes across a diverse sonic terrain. based on live improvisation, the ministry of inside things creates electronic realizations that flow from theme to theme, within the context of a composed suite of music. through use of textures and atmospheres as well as harmony, rhythm and melody, the group transports the listener on an internal aural excursion. the ministry of inside things exist outside the confines of the recording studio and in the realm of the live performance. as moit, art cohen and chuck van zyl continue a tradition of bringing an otherwise methodical studio based art form out into the spontaneity of the performance environment. their third cd "ambient elsewhere" (2008) feels dark and isolated when compared to their two earlier releases. while "everlasting moment" (2003) explored the edges, dynamics and tension of space and atmosphere, and "contact point" (2006) embraced the more unified themes of cosmic, biospheric and macrocosmic interaction, "ambient elsewhere" moves through strange new territory in-between and outside of traditional spacemusic. drawn from a range of chilling themes, this album sonifies wintertime, desolate landscapes and the soul's midnight. moving through the timbral badlands of the empty quarter, "ambient elsewhere" offers up a courageous intimacy. always bringing their own influences and innovation to the music process, moit produces a sound that is uniquely individual and personal. veteran spacemusic duo the tangent project features the ample talents of synthesist jeff and guitarist harrison mckay. experimenting with sounds and textures reminiscent of the classics rubycon and phaedra their approach incorporates a unique sensibility and outlook. coulter's sequencer runs, synth pads and melodies all move at different speeds while mckay's processed guitar alternates between emitting atmospheric textures and liquid lead solos. their realizations are in constant motion, either pushing forward, or churning in stillness, or at some indistinct level in between. coulter and mckay explore areas of both dark and light. their music is a culmination of a lifetime worth of experience. they will be performing selections from their most recent album release, threads. thinairx is steve bowman playing electrified clarinet—a regular orchestral clarinet modified with aguitar pickup, and then processed through a chain of guitar pedals. virtually every sound in a thinairx performance originates from the clarinet, then is pitch shifted, modulated, delayed, looped, stacked, warped, and turned upside down. no sequencers, drum machines or backing tracks. no laptop. the result is like nothing you’ve ever heard. it’s electronic music driven by the expressiveness of a wind instrument. sometimes it sounds like a clarinet. other times you’d never guess it was anything but a full synth-driven band. thinairx is spacemusic with a jam-band sensibility. but not free jams. the pieces are composed, with themes and structure and discernable musical ideas. not scored note by note but, as with jam bands or jazz, each performance is unique, capturing the energy of the moment. the music ranges from ambient and dreamy to raucous noise. harmonies from modal to atonal. melodies from chromatic angularity to singing themes. sometimes all in the same composition. steve is a veteran electronic musician, enthralled with all the fantastic sounds that modern circuitry can generate. but it’s electronics grounded in a musical sensibility shaped by a lifetime of listening to string quartets, renaissance masses, beethoven, ives, subotnick, stockhausen, reich, ligeti, zappa, beefheart, “more grateful dead shows than i can count” and a degree in music from harvard. before switching to the clarinet steve played keyboards and synths—you may have heard him perform solo as thin air or with art cohen as the duo delicate monster. october 27th 2017 - kip rosser, electric diamond and george wallace kip rosser: for twenty years, kip rosser’s solo performances, staged productions, award-winning compositions and industry recognition have earned him a reputation as one of the most accomplished thereminists in the country. rosser typically moves beyond a standard recital format, making for a unique event that combines music (ranging from classical to jazz to popular) with stories and performance art, continually pushing the boundaries of what the theremin can play and do. his programs for special events are tailored specifically to suit occasion and client musical preferences. in an academic setting, the programs are always age appropriate and the presentation specific to the class subject. back in 1996, after a twenty-one year hiatus from serious musical study, rosser crossed paths with the grandfather of all electronic instruments; he purchased a kit and built his first theremin. previously, kip graduated from ithaca college with a bfa in acting/directing and was then the sole candidate accepted in the graduate directing program at northwestern university. after receiving the mfa, he moved to new york city where he directed plays, worked as a playwright, as well as working as a graphic artist and copywriter. electric diamond: humanity has always been fascinated by the diamond: shimmering,multi-faceted and mesmerizing. that same description is more than apt when attempting to convey the impact of a performance by electric diamond. “dispersion” is the term used to characterize a diamond’s colored light. the rainbow that should jump from a diamond is known as its “fire.” although the official measurement of the fire can only be done by machine, the human eye can actually see and measure it. as for the fire jumping from electric diamond, 20th century music magazine wrote: “a step beyond... a window into the future of music.” and variety called it, “a wonderful trip into the asteroids...a fully symphonic piece of intense dignity and feeling.” at the heart of electric diamond’s fire are two extraordinary musicians, don slepian and stuart diamond. their story spans forty years of composing, collaboration and performing together. stuart diamond is producer, composer, musician, writer, director, video artist, and journalist. he is also a woodrow wilson visiting fellow and trustee for the california institute of integral studies in san francisco. his instrument? the ewi – short for electronic wind instrument. the ewi is essentially a synthesizer that’s played like a woodwind, requiring expert embouchure and breath control. in diamond’s hands, the ewi can imitate any traditional woodwind as well as “go stratospheric,” creating both raw and deeply ethereal sonic textures and “voices.” keyboard virtuoso, don slepian, has created his own descriptive mantra: “high technology, human touch.” during his career at bell laboratories, he spent two years working with their most advanced digital synthesizer. a true pioneer in electronic music, he was a synthesizer soloist with the honolulu symphony. in addition to being presented by wnyc's “new sounds” show in new york's lincoln center, he was selected by the french ministry of culture for a residency at the centre georges pompidou in paris. together, diamond and slepian craft a seamless music experience that move “beyond sounds we explore. the actual sounds of our music are the outer coverings of deeper expressions, of the feelings, emotions...the sounds we explore are our vehicles to share what we discover with our audiences.” george wallace: in live performance, multi-instrumentalist george wallace presents a dazzling array of wondrous, imaginatively crafted soundscapes bound to delight fans of deep ambient, techno-tribal, and space music. george is a seasoned performer, having spent years with bands playing various permutations of rock, jazz, and popular music. but for the past few years he’s been on hiatus from playing out, mainly producing studio recordings of his own compositions, with recent forays into making music for film and television. he has recently risen to the challenge of engineering a way to deliver his particular brand of ambient music - inherently layered and complex - in such a way that its live performance is faithful to the sonic dimension and depth of the recorded version. during the course of a given set (anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours, depending) audiences will experience something akin to hypnosis as our senses are immersed in music fed by george’s fierce, spontaneous inspiration and tempered with his keen feel for rhythmic and dramatic flow. in addition to the synthesizers he plays onstage, george uses guitars both acoustic and electric, native american flutes, rain sticks, bells and rattlers, and even a tibetan singing bowl to round out the sonic palette. his musical program consists of pieces both old and new; a few older favorites culled from his several ambient releases are woven in with newer, as-yet unrecorded pieces, most of which are essentially structured improvisations based on predetermined soundstages, the end result being that no two performances are exactly alike. naturally this calls up a certain amount of audience engagement (and lots of fun for all) as george often says he likes to read – and get energy from – the audience he’s playing for. adding to the mix is his occasional blending of natural ambiences such as forest sounds, night sounds, wind…and a few which might be best described as unearthly. these aural treats serve as the ‘ear candy’ which help to put the whole thing over-the-top. despite his affable stage demeanor, the intensity of the music itself makes it evident that george likes to play deep. through his magical musings, we are invited to discover a new access to our true selves, from the deepest regions of our souls to the ecstatic, sublime worlds of our highest potential. presented here is wild, enriched sound, simultaneously borrowing from the primal past and the celestial future, creating an inspiring, cleansing, memorable experience of exotic places and times well beyond this one. december 3rd 2016 - brian john mcbrearty, inception and the time merchant brian john mcbrearty is a philadelphia-based guitarist and composer. brian's music combines american primitive guitar style with ambient textures, minimalist composition techniques and elements of drone and psychedelia. a graduate of new york university’s renowned jazz program, brian released his debut album as a solo artist, things i recall, in summer 2015. brian recorded things i recall in his south philadelphia home using two microphones, a 1965 fender mustang and a 1970s japanese-made martin knockoff, and the result is a meditative, hypnotic, melodic collection of guitar orchestrations of cinematic scope that recall the work of john fahey, david pajo’s papa m project, and sonny sharrock. inception - the starting vibration and continued exploration of sound, syncopation and groove. imagined dimensions and hues of pitch and landscapes. a trio made of matthew lo re -guitar , steve testa - bass , john testa - drums the time merchant - with over 50 albums, the ever prolific time merchant is on a constant quest to explore sound. the first album appeared in 1994. little else is known as the time merchant tends to keep out of the public eye, preferring instead to hide away in the recording studio (the wave chamber), working methodically to create the next sound world. works have explored several genres, including: experimental, dark ambient, atmospheric. pure electronic, and various combinations. november 11th 2016 - michael rabito, rosie langabeer and it's not night...it's space michael rabito is a musician that has been discovering his propensity for the fusion of opposites for many years now. he started taking the electric guitar seriously when he was eleven and was playing out professionally by the time he left for college with his band in vermont. after a move to boston the bringing together of the free flow of improvisation and the rigidity of structure increased as he played with a group of berklee college of music musicians for about five years. during this time his interest in loops, synthesizers and keyboards began to grow and helped to fuse space, harmony, action and dissonance. this has all culminated with his latest project back in the princeton area called manifested; a progressive fusion of funk, rock, dance and ambient music that has brought the group to new york, boston, philadelphia and many points between within their first year. they can be heard here with more information at their facebook page. michael also performs interactive ambient space music with local visual artist ted klett. they will be preforming at art all night on june 15th -16th and can be heard at on the autonomicdrone soundcloud page. rosie langabeer - hailed by the new york times for her ability to time bend, rosie langabeer’s sound is more like a transnational emporium of amusements, than music. using electronic and acoustic instruments ingredients of exotica, science fiction, free jazz and an evolving cast of superfluities combine, resulting in something elusively familiar “…a suspended, surreal condition.” ny times. a regular composer for theatre and dance companies, langabeer has performed throughout new zealand and the us and also in sri lanka, japan, mexico, france and great britain, recent festival appearances include baltimore’s high zero festival (2016), jacobs pillow dance festival, (ma, 2016), borderline festival, (auckland, 2016), joyce theater ballet festival (ny, 2015). collaborators include neil feather, balletx, maiko matsushima, pig iron theatre company, andrew mars/settled arrows, kate porter, jeff henderson and chris o’connor. it’s not night: it’s space - formed in the winter of 2010, it's not night: it's space has beeninnis.jpgpushing boundaries ever since. always instrumental, inn:is delve into heavy psych territory as a traditional power trio should, but they apply a more narrative songwriting style that is often associated with post-rock. the result is long-form sonic journeys that invite the listener to get in touch with their place among inner and outer space. their latest manifestation, an lp titled "our birth is but a sleep & a forgetting," was released in june 2016 on small stone records. the desire to keep moving further has allowed for electronic instruments to start trickling in: synths and samplers are poised to move from the background to the foreground as inn:is follow the trail into the great beyond. november 15th 2016 - chuck van zyl, nocturne blue and centrozoon chuck van zyl - best known as host of stars end (wxpn's renowned radio program of spacemusic dreamscapes) and as coordinator of the gatherings(philadelphia's premiere concert series of innovative music), chuck van zyl has also been making his own unique style of electronic music since 1983. over the course of his musical existence chuck van zyl has developed a signature exploratory style. by blending the primitive machine beauty of classics like "ricochet" with the highly formed values of more recent groups such as redshift and arc, his solo studio works are the result of a persistent creativity. with a solid melodic invention, atmospheric modulations and heroic shifts in tonality, van zyl masterfully realizes the fascinating patterns, riffs and pulses that dominate his live concerts. as the music forms, climbs and sustains, listeners are pulled into a highly distinctive mindscape. tone patterns weave and collide as go-for-broke keyboard lead lines dance high above - while synthetic strings draw long lines across a cool digital plane. chuck van zyl is at home in this endlessly inventive genre, offering ample muscle for the adventurous, archaic modulations for the experimentalist and dreamy floating space for the cloudwalker. centrozoon is a trio that is interested in the creation of music in experimental settings. it has existed in several forms for more than fifteen years. current members are bernhard wöstheinrich (synthesizers, electronics), markus reuter (guitars, electronics) and tobias reber (electronics). from the beginning of centrozoon, the group has had an interest in "experimental" music not only in improvised sound experiments but also in the improvisation of form and structure - improvisation beyond the individual sounding moment. music as an exploration of possibilities and extremes, playing with boundaries. ironically, the group's most widely acclaimed work has been its live and studio collaboration with singer tim bowness (no-man), a modern pop project that was an exception to the band's usual approach. in its regular, less accessible work, the projects fearlessness in combination with its trademark deadpan humour has usually provoked very strong emotional reactions and reviews, and led to controversial discussion among electronic music lovers. the music featured on the group's album releases include the electronica soundscapes of "blast" (2000), the disturbing free-form mayhem of "the cult of: bibbiboo" (2002), "angel liquor" (2006) or the reduced chamber electronics of "lovefield" (2007). 2012 sees the release of "boner", another dive into unexplored territory and impossible combinations of references, where dozens of hours of music are distilled into an endlessly deep texture of frightening as well as captivating moods. centrozoon has played concerts and appeared live on air in the usa, uk, finland, netherlands, belgium, luxemburg, austria, switzerland and germany. notable appearances include concerts at the ars electronica 2004 festival (linz, a), virtual arts day (helsinki, sf) and a uk tour including performances at burning shed nights (norwich, uk). "humour is not permitted." - robert fripp bernhard and markus will go into a retrospective mode for this tour, mixing their space music and experimental electronica in varying ratios, depending on the nature of the context their are performing in. having started to perform together in 1996, this series of concert is a personal celebration of a long-term artistic collaboration. centrozoon is currently mostly working as a trio with swiss member tobias reber, who unfortunately is not able to join us on this tour. you can see and hear the trio in action in this preview for the upcoming "hununpenti" dvd and cd release: nocturne blue - nocturne blue is dutch rall's audio/visual project incorporating elements of post-rock, trip-hop, dream pop, and frippertronics with major contributions from german composer markus reuter using the u8 touch guitar. dutch rall is a producer, director, cinematographer, editor and musician. he is a 3-time emmy-winner whose work for pbs has received a grant from the national endowment for the arts. dutch has traveled the world as the visual and musical director of a project for filmmaker david lynch, has lectured for the national press photographers association and was the winner of the world's smallest film festival, the very first competition for video on mobile devices. dutch has created official music videos for the duran duran art project tv mania, has shot olympic television campaigns for visa, and produced experimental performance dance films such as 'fifth wall', with guggenheim fellow omar carrum. his work has been seen at numerous festivals including cannes and sxsw and has been broadcast across the eu and us. october 29th 2016 - harrison mckay, the great quentini and hotel neon. harrison mckay - the ambient, atmospheric and progressive guitar player with the group the tangent project and the duo hunter & harrison will be making his first solo performance in philadelpia in 30 years. harrison first received airplay from stars end in the early 80's with his self produced cassettes usually recorded live to tape using guitar, synthesizers and minimal effects. after many years of inactivity he returned to electronic music in 2006 by teaming up with jeff coulter from 80's electronic duo tangent. his solo performances are improvisational and loop based using sequencing and extensive sound processing. the result will be a unique aural experience. "mckay's expressive guitar leads expand and recede. delightfully processed and rounded, his cerebral performances move from prog-inspired virtuosity to gentle ambient sighs."- the tangent project - fuse album review by chuck van zyl/star's end - 22 october 2009 the great quentini - playfulness, respect, honesty and hope - my art is about instinct. whatever disciplinary boundaries i cross are irrelevant to me. i know what i like and i go there trusting that what fascinates me is, in fact, fascinating. my art springs from that same playful part of myself that compels me to build sand castles on a beach. art world angst, which i've always found alienating, is neither my approach nor my goal. ephemeral art made from readily available materials, improvised music on homemade instruments, and spectacles of buffoonery in the service of magical transformation are my goals. i am constructing an alternate reality the way a small boy builds a model train layout. i reuse cast-off wood, plastic, metal and rubber junk and glue it all together using instructions from inner sources, a reflection of natural form, and a homage to tribal art. i don't seek to replicate reality but rather to create a real emotional sense through gesture. i observe the human condition and report back my findings. these reports take the form of expressive vignettes and autobiographical stories from my life. for convenience i have come to call what i do, performance art. a ten year old boy viewing my performance put it this way, "don't be afraid, he's just a sacred clown." clowning, theater, poetic writing, animal noises, techno-primitive costumes, and improvised music, are elements that i use --but i blur the boundaries and exist across boundaries. my work is an opportunity to expand the possibility of what is possible rather than a continuation of a venerable tradition. i make good-natured art based on my varied interests: philosophy, science, religion, myth, culture, how the brain works, film, primitive art, evolution, drugs, sex, and technological change. the world is full to the brim with greed, fear, hatred and avarice - i don't want to add to that. my message is, "do what you love to the fullest , trust yourself, honor life and laugh, its good for you." -- quentin davisv- a.k.a. the great quentin hotel neon is the philadelphia-based trio of michael tasselmyer, andrew tasselmyer & steven kemner. together they create immersive and soul-stirring soundscapes, focusing intently on a restrained, minimal aesthetic aided by film, images, and live projections. hotel neon’s debut self-titled album was crafted in 2013 with little more than a personal computer in a home studio, then self-released on limited cassette tape. the music eventually caught the ear of ian hawgood, founder of eclectic tokyo-based label home normal (christopher bissonette, celer, library tapes), and was subsequently remastered in january 2015 by hawgood himself, lending even greater dynamic range to the music. the grainy textures, mechanized rhythms, and subterranean bass pulses that permeate the album were made clearer and more focused, leading to positive critical review and "best of 2015" status in outlets like headphone commute, textura, and arctic drones.hotel neon then released its newest work, “remnants,” through acclaimed u.k. experimental imprint fluid audio in march 2016, followed by extensive touring throughout the u.s.a. with fellow ambient artists lowercase noises (nm) and slow meadow (tx, hammock music). markus reuter. markus reuter + elliot sharp and nocturne blue -
